Every year during the winter, especially at the holidays I have to tell myself: “You’re not a bear! You don’t have to eat extra calories to get through until spring.” But it is so difficult because we go from bags filled with candy at Halloween to tables loaded with turkey, ham, pies, and cookies from Thanksgiving to Christmas and really, who can resist? Not me. So, once again, I enter the New Year weighing more than I am happy with and looking for the best deals at a gym like fifty percent of the population! During my search I found some interesting information especially for our individuals with disabilities.
First, I have to admit, I am older and because of this, I get to be in a Silver Sneakers program through my insurance. Not all insurance offers this, but it’s worth a look if you are over age 65. Not only is the program free, but it also offers classes specifically modified for older people who may not have the abilities to attend regular classes. Many of the gyms accept Silver Sneakers so it only takes a phone call to get the information.
Second, I decided to check into gyms that offer modifications for individuals with disabilities. Two gyms I frequent often are the YMCA and Planet Fitness, and I was happy to see what they offer.
The YMCA seems to be very committed to meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities. At their website, FWYMCA.org, I was able to find a lot of information. “At the Y, our mission is to be for all. We provide an array of inclusive and adaptive programs. From infants to seniors, beginners or seasoned athletes, we welcome you to join our adaptive and inclusive programs.” The Y offers adaptive facilities, pools, and equipment. Their inclusive programs allow, “For individuals with and without diverse abilities to participate in activities and classes together.” Also, the Y does base membership fees on income and also offers financial assistance as needed.
Next, Planet Fitness is in the process of making their gyms more accessible to individuals with disabilities. On “September 21, 2021, Planet Fitness…announced a commitment to expand access to accessible exercise equipment.” They continue to add new equipment as it becomes available and label the inclusive equipment at the gyms.People can check their website to see what has been added.
Lastly, to my colleagues and participants at CORE, now we have no excuses for losing those extra pounds and for getting in shape, so I will see you at the gym!
Here’s to a healthy, happy 2025!
